Piano Sonata No.2.

Reviewer: Charles Oldenkamp.

This powerful single-movement Sonata has a real forward thrust and dynamism. From beginning to end it seems to move from moment to moment ever onwards and upwards. It is characterized by a recognizable advanced tonality sometimes bordering on clashing note-clusters, at other times verging on a far more diatonic language.

Aural perception of unity in atonal pieces is difficult, but examination of the work will reveal a strong sense of unity based on pitch-class sets; arrangements of intervals that share aurally similar properties. Two clear ones here are minor 2nds and perfect 5ths. The intensity of the Sonata builds as the piece flies through crashing open intervals and shimmering flourishes, dynamic contrasts and the ever-changing use of register.
